My experience with MassHire has been nothing short of eye-opening. Before becoming involved with the organization, I never realized a professional environment could feel so much like home. What stood out most was the sense of community. From the very beginning, I was surrounded by individuals who felt less like coworkers and mentors and more like family.
I was first introduced to MassHire through one of their workshops, where I had the opportunity to learn from people who had faced many of the same challenges and obstacles that I had. Listening to their stories of perseverance, resilience, and growth was inspiring. Many of these individuals transformed their setbacks into motivation, eventually launching successful businesses and dedicating themselves to helping others do the same.
Their message was clear: invest in yourself, build your skills, and use your success to strengthen your community. The discussions and debates we shared provided reassurance and confidence. For the first time, I felt like I was in a space where real conversations about real-world issues could happen openly and honestly.
Stepping Into Leadership Through the WAVE Program
My journey with MassHire continued when I was hired as a Peer Leader. The organization recognized my positive attitude, willingness to take initiative, and commitment to going above and beyond. Those qualities eventually led me to being selected as the lead among the Peer Leaders during the WAVE Program.
The WAVE Program is a youth-focused initiative designed to engage 14- and 15-year-olds in volunteer work, career readiness, and skill-building opportunities. While I was excited about the position, I initially felt nervous about leading a group of nearly 40 teenagers. However, those concerns quickly disappeared as I got to know the students.
The young people in the program demonstrated professionalism, enthusiasm, and a genuine eagerness to learn. Their willingness to participate and collaborate was inspiring.
One of the most memorable projects involved creating and operating lemonade stands. Through this activity, students learned real-world entrepreneurial skills, including business planning, budgeting, marketing, sales, and teamwork. Watching them create business concepts, develop marketing strategies, craft sales pitches, and calculate expenses showed just how much they absorbed from the experience.
Even more rewarding was witnessing the pride they felt when their ideas came to life. The lemonade stands became more than just a project. They became a lesson in leadership, cooperation, and the value of working toward a shared goal.
Developing Skills Beyond the Classroom
The WAVE Program offered students exposure to a wide variety of learning opportunities and career pathways.
Students participated in entrepreneurial workshops where they learned the fundamentals of starting and managing a business while also understanding the importance of supporting local economies and fellow entrepreneurs.
The arts program encouraged creativity through painting, spoken word, and music. Students explored self-expression in ways that built confidence and allowed them to showcase their talents.
Technology-focused classes introduced coding concepts and music production techniques. Participants learned how to create beats, analyze rhythm and tempo, and combine technical skills with creativity to develop unique projects.
Financial literacy workshops equipped students with practical knowledge that will help them make informed decisions about their future careers and personal finances. Through these experiences, they gained insight into different professions and developed a deeper understanding of workplace expectations.
One of the most exciting areas of learning centered around renewable energy. Students explored clean energy careers, manufacturing opportunities, and the growing need for young professionals to enter these industries. It was inspiring to see them recognize the role they can play in shaping a more sustainable future.
The Importance of Communication and Connection
Among all the workshops and lectures, my personal favorite was the Healthy Communication and Relationship Skills class.
What made this experience so impactful was the honesty and vulnerability of the conversations. Students discussed topics such as disrespect, loneliness, conflict, and miscommunication while sharing how those situations affected them personally.
Not everyone agreed on the best way to handle challenges, but that diversity of thought made the discussions meaningful. The students openly reflected on how certain words, tones, and actions can impact relationships with friends, family members, and loved ones.
Listening to these conversations reminded me that communication is one of the most valuable life skills a person can develop. The willingness of students to share their perspectives created an environment built on empathy, understanding, and mutual respect.
Expanding My Horizons with Old Colony Planning Council
Through MassHire, I was also introduced to the Old Colony Planning Council (OCPC), an experience that has significantly broadened my perspective on professional opportunities and community development.
Before joining OCPC, I had little understanding of the extensive work that goes into creating thriving, safe, and sustainable communities. Through my time there, I have gained a greater appreciation for the planning, collaboration, and dedication required to ensure communities continue to prosper for future generations.
OCPC has given me hope and confidence in my future career path. The organization has provided opportunities that I never imagined possible, placing me in professional environments where my voice is valued and my contributions matter.
As part of the team, I have assisted with marketing initiatives, developed social media content, contributed ideas for website improvements, organized office materials, filed important documents, and participated in company meetings. Each responsibility has allowed me to strengthen my professional skill set while gaining firsthand experience in a collaborative workplace.
Most importantly, OCPC has provided mentorship, guidance, and support that continue to help me grow both personally and professionally.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on my journey, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that MassHire and the Old Colony Planning Council have provided. Both organizations have played a major role in shaping my confidence, leadership abilities, and career aspirations.
They have challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, introduced me to inspiring professionals, and shown me what is possible when people invest in one another’s growth and success.
The trust, transparency, and encouragement I have received have made a lasting impact on my life. As I continue to develop my professional skills and pursue my career goals, I will always be thankful for the mentorship, opportunities, and sense of belonging that MassHire and OCPC have given me.
Through leadership, learning, and community, I have discovered not only valuable career experiences but also a renewed belief in my own potential.
