LONG RANGE TRANSPORTATION PLAN (LRTP)

ABOUT THE PLAN

In Federal Fiscal Year 2026 beginning in October 2025, Old Colony Planning Council will begin the process of updating the Old Colony Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), with an anticipated endorsement of the FFY 2028 LRTP in the Spring of 2027.

The LRTP provides a document and a process that will meet the challenges of preserving and expanding the transportation system. Following the directives of the laws regulating the metropolitan planning process, it includes goals, policies, analyses, and recommendations necessary to build and maintain an efficient, effective and affordable regional transportation system. The intention of the LRTP is to build on the current system, working to make it comprehensive and fully integrated.

The transportation management systems provide a process that furnishes information on transportation system performance to decision makers for selecting and implementing cost-effective strategies/actions to manage new and existing facilities so that congestion is alleviated, and the mobility of persons and goods is enhanced.

The mission of the LRTP is to provide a safe and efficient transportation system that promotes multi-modalism (roads, transit, sidewalks, bicycles, etc.), supports projected growth, and addresses livability and social concepts, economic sustainability, and environmental impacts through effective planning/policy and local/regional coordination.
